Types of insurance

Crop insurance is purchased by agricultural producers, including farmers and landowners, to protect themselves against loss of their crops due to natural disasters such as hail, drought, and floods, or the loss of revenue due to declines in the prices of agricultural commodities.

The two general categories of crop insurance are called crop-yield insurance and crop-revenue insurance.

With crops hail insurance, hail is the main peril covered by the policy, although coverage for "wind snap" and fire can be added. Crop hail insurance can be purchased almost any time.

Multi-peril crop insurance protects against a broader range of perils including drought, wind, hail, flood and others. Within multi peril crop insurance there is Yield Protection and Revenue Protection. There are several levels of coverage to choose from. The deadline to apply for or cancel multi-peril crop insurance for spring crops is March 15th each year and September 3oth each year for fall seeded crops and alfalfa.

Multi-peril crop insurance is a federal program and premiums are partially subsidized by the U.S.D.A.
